Dr Jorge Prieto Math and Science

Honestly, keeping my kid's attendance up at Prieto is a constant battle. The school has been really struggling with high chronic absenteeism lately, and you can definitely feel it. It’s hard for the kids to stay on track when it feels like half the class is out sick or just failing to show up. I’ve seen some of the CTU reports regarding facility cleanliness and safety concerns, and it makes me nervous about how well the building is actually being maintained. Communication about health issues is pretty hit-or-miss, and finding consistent support for student wellness is frustrating. It feels like the staff is spread way too thin to really prioritize the health environment our kids deserve.

Prieto is okay, but it’s definitely a typical big CPS school. My son’s classroom usually looks clean enough, but when the flu starts going around the neighborhood, it hits the school fast. I wish they were a little more proactive with the communication when multiple kids in a grade are out sick; usually, I only hear about it from other moms in our group chat rather than an official email. On the plus side, the nurse there is really sweet and was super helpful when my youngest had an allergic reaction last year. They’re strict about the sick policy, which is a pain when you're a working parent, but I guess it helps keep the bugs from spreading even more.
