John W Garvy Elementary School

Honestly, I've been pretty impressed with how Garvy handles the health and wellness side of things. The school feels clean when you walk in, and I haven't seen the constant 'revolving door' of sickness that some of my friends deal with at other CPS schools. The student-teacher ratio is actually decent (around 15:1), so the teachers aren't totally overwhelmed and can actually notice if a kid is looking sluggish or under the weather before it turns into a whole-class outbreak. They seem well-organized with their protocols, and communication about anything going around is usually pretty quick. It’s a solid, safe environment for the kids.

My youngest is at Garvy and overall I'm pretty happy with how they handle the health side of things. The school always looks really clean when I'm in for pick-up, and honestly, the staff is great about calling right away if a kid looks even a little bit off, which I appreciate even if it means leaving work early. They’re super strict about the 24-hour fever-free rule, which can be a pain but definitely keeps the stomach bugs from spreading through the whole classroom. Communication is usually just those standard district emails, but the school nurse is actually super helpful if you have a specific question about allergies or meds.
