Charles H Wacker Elementary School

Honestly, I have some real concerns about the environment at Wacker Elementary. It feels like the building is always catching up on basic maintenance—I noticed they’ve been putting in orders for air filters and dealing with ADA compliance issues lately, which makes me wonder about the overall air quality and infrastructure for the kids. The attendance rates in the district are a struggle and it shows in the classroom culture. While it’s a small school, it feels like they are constantly under-resourced, and I don't see enough proactive wellness or health programs being pushed. It’s frustrating because you want to feel like the school is a healthy place for your kid to be all day, but between the old building vibes and the lack of communication on health policies, it’s a lot of 'wait and see'.

My youngest is at Wacker right now and honestly, the small school vibe really helps with the germ situation compared to the bigger CPS schools. Since there aren't a million kids in the hallways, it feels a lot cleaner and the staff actually knows who my kid is when they’re feeling under the weather. They’re pretty on top of calling parents if a kid has a fever, though I do wish the communication about when 'stomach bugs' are going around the classroom was a little bit faster. Overall, the nurse is super sweet and the school feels well-maintained for being an older building.
