  • Honestly, Ashburn is just okay when it comes to the health side of things. It’s your typical older CPS building, so cleanliness can be a bit of a gamble depending on the day. I noticed in some recent board reports they had to call in emergency plumbers, which makes me wonder about the state of the bathrooms and pipes for the kids. It’s a 3.5-star school for a reason—it’s not terrible, but it definitely lacks that 'wellness' focus you see at some of the magnet schools. The sick-child policy is standard, but communication about bugs or viruses going around the classrooms can be a bit slow. Not the worst, but keep your hand sanitizer packed in their backpacks.

  • My youngest is in 2nd grade at Ashburn and honestly, they've been pretty on top of things this year regarding health. I really appreciate that they actually send out emails when there's a spike in strep or flu in a specific grade so I know to keep an eye out for symptoms. The classrooms always seem clean and don't have that 'musty' school smell, which is a big plus. My only gripe is the nurse isn't there every single day since she splits time with another CPS school, so sometimes minor scrapes just get a quick bandage from the front office. But overall, the teachers are great about letting kids keep water bottles at their desks and making sure they get outside for recess unless it's absolutely freezing.
