Adlai E Stevenson Elementary School

Honestly, I’m getting pretty frustrated with the situation at Stevenson. My kid has been home more than usual this year, and I'm not surprised given the constant plumbing and HVAC issues. It feels like every other month there's a work order to 'rod out the main drain' or fix a broken furnace. Having the heat go out or dealing with backed-up drains isn't exactly a healthy environment for elementary kids to be in all day. It’s hard to focus on 'wellness' and school spirit when the building itself feels like it’s falling apart. Communication from the office about these repairs is pretty vague, too. I really hope they get the facility maintenance under control because right now it’s a struggle just to keep the kids comfortable and healthy in their classrooms.

Stevenson has been pretty solid for my youngest. The building is older, but you can tell the custodial staff actually cares because it doesn't have that 'old school' grime you see in some other CPS buildings. They’re super on top of sending out those blast emails whenever a case of strep or hand-foot-mouth is going around the classroom, which I really appreciate so I can keep a lookout. My only gripe is the nurse isn't there every single day of the week, but the office staff is really sweet and handles scraped knees or tummy aches well enough when she’s out. It’s a good, clean environment for the kids.
