  • Honestly, I’m pretty concerned about the health environment at Sir Miles Davis. The chronic absenteeism rate is super high, sitting around 31%, which tells me there’s either a major illness cycle constantly going around or families just aren't feeling supported enough to get kids into the building. It’s hard for the kids to stay healthy when the school feels so under-resourced. We definitely feel the 27:1 student-to-teacher ratio; when that many kids are crowded into one room, every flu or cold just rips through the class in days. I've noticed the communication about outbreaks is pretty spotty—you kind of just have to guess why half the class is missing. I love the magnet focus, but they really need to get the attendance and wellness side of things under control because right now it feels like a bit of a germ factory with very little oversight.

  • Honestly, I’m pretty frustrated with the situation at Miles Davis Magnet. The chronic absenteeism is a huge red flag—it's over 40%—which tells you a lot about the general health and wellness culture here. When that many kids are missing school regularly, it’s hard for any kind of consistent health policy to stick. Between the high student-to-teacher ratio and the fact that we're constantly waiting on 'facility maintenance' and lighting updates, the building just doesn't feel like the cleanest or most updated environment for the kids. Communication about illnesses going around is spotty at best, and it feels like the staff is too overwhelmed to really keep on top of things. It's a magnet school for the arts, but they really need to get the basics of student wellness and attendance under control first.
