  • Lately I've been feeling pretty uneasy about sending my kid here. The chronic absenteeism is over 30%, which is a huge red flag because it feels like the school has zero control over health or student engagement. When that many kids are consistently out, you know stuff is circulating and not being managed. Plus, with the student-to-teacher ratio being as high as it is, there is just no way the staff can keep an eye on hygiene or notice when a kid is starting to look sick before it spreads to the whole room. It feels like the building is always playing catch-up and the wellness culture just isn't there.

  • As a parent with a child at John Foster Dulles Elementary, I’d describe the health and safety picture as mixed but improving, with caring adults working inside a challenging environment. The school serves a high‑needs PK–8 population with a student–teacher ratio around 19:1, so classrooms can feel full, but my child’s teachers have generally been attentive about things like handwashing, sending kids to the nurse when they feel sick, and communicating if there’s something going around. The neighborhood context is tough, and safety outside the building is an ongoing concern you feel at dismissal and on the walk to and from school. Inside, CPS maintenance and cleanliness are okay but could be better: bathrooms and hallways are usually acceptable, but there are days when I wish there was more frequent cleaning and quicker follow‑up on building issues. The school is rated “Intensive Support” on the Illinois Report Card, which reflects academic and climate challenges more than specific health code problems, but it does match my sense that the school is still working toward a more consistently safe and supportive environment. On the positive side, my child feels known by name, and there are staff members who clearly care about students’ emotional well‑being, stepping in when there are conflicts or bullying concerns. Attendance initiatives, free meals, and Title I supports help ensure kids’ basic needs are met, which is a big part of overall health in this community. As a parent, I stay very engaged—asking questions, watching communication closely, and coordinating with other families, and with that level of involvement, I feel cautiously comfortable keeping my child at Dulles while hoping to see continued improvements in cleanliness, campus security, and overall school climate.
