Charles R Darwin Elementary School

I really wanted to love Darwin since it's right here in Logan Square, but the health environment is pretty lackluster. Honestly, it feels like the school is always struggling with maintenance and cleanliness; every time there’s a bug going around, it hits the classrooms hard and communication from the office is super slow. The student-to-staff ratios are also a major concern for me because it feels like the teachers are too overwhelmed to notice when a kid is actually coming down with something, and the facilities just feel dated and not great for air quality. It's frustrating because the community is nice, but I'm constantly worried about what my kid is picking up there.

My son has been at Darwin for a couple of years now and honestly, I'm pretty happy with how they handle the 'germ factor.' The school is an older building in Logan Square, but the custodial staff really stays on top of things—it doesn't have that dusty, old-school smell, you know? Whenever there's a stomach bug or something going around, the tech-savvy teachers are super quick to shoot out an email or a message on the app so we can keep an eye out for symptoms. They are pretty strict about the 24-hour fever-free rule, which can be a pain when you're trying to get to work, but it definitely keeps the whole class from getting wiped out at once. My only gripe is that I wish they had more outdoor time for the kids when it's chilly out instead of just keeping them in the gym, but overall the vibe is really healthy and the staff genuinely cares about the kids' well-being.
