  • Honestly, keeping it real for any parents thinking about J.N. Thorp—the health situation is pretty rough. The school deals with some serious chronic absenteeism issues, and it feels like there’s always a bug going around because the attendance just isn't stable. The student-to-teacher ratio is also pretty high, so I don't feel like the staff really has the time to notice if a kid is starting to look sick before they've already spread it to half the class. Communication about illnesses is hit or miss, and I’ve noticed some notes in board reports about cleaning equipment issues recently which doesn't exactly make me feel great about how deep the 'deep cleans' actually go. I want to love the community vibe here, but it's hard to focus on learning when the wellness culture feels so reactive instead of proactive. If your kid has a sensitive immune system, you might want to look elsewhere.

  • Honestly, Thorp is pretty much what you'd expect from a neighborhood CPS school. It’s an older building so it’s not always looking spotless, but the staff really does their best to stay on top of things. When the flu was going around last month, the teacher sent home a heads-up email pretty quickly, which I appreciated so I could keep an eye on my son's sniffles. My main gripe is that the nurse isn't there every single day, which is stressful if your kid has allergies or needs regular meds. They’re pretty strict about the 24-hour fever-free rule, which is annoying for work schedules but definitely helps keep the classrooms from becoming total germ zones. Overall, it’s a decent, safe spot for the kids.
