  • Honestly, I have some real concerns about the environment at Beulah Shoesmith. My biggest issue right now is the safety and health risk from the building maintenance—I’ve seen public reports that the exterior doors aren't even latching properly unless they are kicked shut. That's a huge security and localized draft issue during the winter. Beyond the building stuff, the school feels really under-resourced when it comes to student wellness support. It’s hard to feel like our kids are in a healthy, top-tier environment when basics like functional doors and consistent janitorial upkeep seem to be falling through the cracks.

  • My 3rd grader has been at Shoesmith for a couple years now and honestly, I’ve been pretty happy with how they handle health stuff. The classrooms always seem clean and don't have that 'old school' dusty smell you find in some CPS buildings. Communication is usually pretty solid too—whenever there's a stomach bug or something going around the classroom, we usually get an email from the teacher or the office pretty fast so we can keep an eye out for symptoms. The sick policy is standard but they’re firm about the 24-hour fever-free rule, which I actually appreciate because it keeps the germs down. Only downside is the nurse isn't there every single day since she splits time with other schools, but the front office staff are total pros at handling scraped knees or an upset stomach when she's out. Overall, it feels like a safe, healthy spot for the kids.
