Edward a Bouchet Math & Science Academy Elementary School

To be honest, I’m really worried about the environment at Bouchet. The chronic absenteeism is hitting like 45%, which tells you everything you need to know about the wellness culture here. It feels like kids are constantly out sick and there isn't a solid handle on preventing stuff from spreading. With the student-to-teacher ratio being so high, the staff is stretched way too thin to keep up with hygiene or even just checking in on the kids' emotional well-being. It’s hard for a school to focus on 'science and math' when the basics like health and attendance are failing this hard. Definitely not the place if you're looking for a proactive approach to student health.

Bouchet is okay when it comes to the health stuff, but it's definitely a typical big CPS school. My youngest says the classrooms are usually clean, but the bathrooms can be a hit or miss by the end of the day. They are pretty strict about the '24-hour fever free' rule which is good for keeping the flu from spreading, but it can be a hassle for working parents. Communication about RSV or COVID clusters has been a bit slow lately, usually just a generic email a couple of days late. I do like that they try to get the kids outside for recess unless it's absolutely freezing—fresh air is so important for keeping them from getting stir-crazy and sharing germs all day.
