Viral gastroenteritis

Viral gastroenteritis, often called the 'stomach flu,' is a common illness that causes inflammation of the stomach and intestines. It's not related to the influenza virus, but rather a variety of other viruses. This infection leads to uncomfortable digestive symptoms that usually resolve on their own.

Common symptoms

  • Diarrhea (often watery)
  • Vomiting
  • Nausea
  • Stomach cramps or pain
  • Low-grade fever
  • Headache
  • Muscle aches
  • Loss of appetite

Cause

Viral gastroenteritis is caused by various viruses, most commonly rotavirus, norovirus, adenovirus, and astrovirus. These viruses are highly contagious and spread easily from person to person.

How common is it?

Viral gastroenteritis (stomach flu) is one of the most common childhood illnesses, affecting virtually all children multiple times. Rotavirus and norovirus are the leading causes. The CDC estimates that acute gastroenteritis causes approximately 1.5 million pediatric outpatient visits annually in the U.S.

Treatment

The main treatment for viral gastroenteritis is to prevent dehydration. Offer small, frequent sips of oral rehydration solution (ORS) or clear fluids like water or diluted juice. Avoid sugary drinks, and continue to offer bland foods if your child is hungry.

Prevention

Frequent and thorough handwashing with soap and water is the most effective way to prevent the spread of viral gastroenteritis, especially after using the bathroom and before eating. Disinfect contaminated surfaces, and avoid sharing food or drinks with sick individuals.
