Adenovirus

Adenovirus is a common group of viruses that can cause a wide range of illnesses, from respiratory infections like the common cold to pink eye and stomach flu. It's highly contagious and can affect people of all ages, but it's particularly common in young children.

Common symptoms

  • Fever
  • Sore throat
  • Runny nose
  • Cough
  • Pink eye (conjunctivitis)
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting

Cause

Adenovirus is caused by a group of viruses called adenoviruses.

How common is it?

Adenovirus infections are extremely common in children, with most kids experiencing at least one adenovirus infection by age 10. According to CDC surveillance data, adenoviruses account for approximately 5-10% of respiratory infections in children. Outbreaks frequently occur in childcare settings, schools, and summer camps.

Treatment

There's no specific cure for adenovirus, so treatment focuses on managing symptoms. Ensure your child gets plenty of rest and drinks fluids to prevent dehydration. Over-the-counter pain relievers and fever reducers (like acetaminophen or ibuprofen, if appropriate for age) can help with discomfort.

Prevention

The best way to prevent the spread of adenovirus is frequent and thorough handwashing with soap and water, especially after coughing, sneezing, or using the bathroom. Avoid touching the face, and keep sick children home from school or daycare to prevent infecting others.
