Bronchiolitis
A common lower-respiratory infection in infants and toddlers, most often caused by RSV, that inflames the small airways of the lungs.
Common symptoms
- Runny nose
- Cough
- Wheezing
- Rapid breathing
- Fever
- Poor feeding
Cause
Usually RSV, but also rhinovirus, parainfluenza, and human metapneumovirus.
How common is it?
Peaks late fall through early spring; most children get RSV by age 2.
Treatment
Supportive care: hydration, nasal saline and suction, humidified air, and fever control. Some infants need hospital care for oxygen or IV fluids.
Prevention
Frequent handwashing, avoiding smoke exposure, keeping infants away from sick contacts, RSV monoclonal antibody (nirsevimab) for eligible infants.
