COVID-19

COVID-19 is a respiratory illness caused by a new coronavirus. It can range from mild to severe, and while children often have milder symptoms, they can still get sick and spread the virus to others. It's important to understand the signs and how to protect your family.

Common symptoms

  • Fever or chills
  • Cough
  • Sore throat
  • Fatigue
  • Headache
  • Muscle or body aches
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Diarrhea

Cause

COVID-19 is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which is a type of coronavirus.

How common is it?

As of 2024, COVID-19 remains endemic in the U.S. population. CDC data indicates that children under 18 account for approximately 15-20% of reported cases. While most children experience mild symptoms, the CDC recommends staying current with vaccinations for children 6 months and older.

Treatment

For most children with mild COVID-19, treatment focuses on managing symptoms at home. This includes rest, plenty of fluids, and over-the-counter medications like acetaminophen or ibuprofen for fever and aches (always follow dosage instructions for your child's age and weight). If your child has severe symptoms or underlying health conditions, contact your pediatrician immediately.

Prevention

To prevent the spread of COVID-19, encourage frequent handwashing with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Keep your child home from school or daycare if they are sick, and ensure they cover coughs and sneezes. Staying up-to-date on recommended vaccinations for your child is also a key preventive measure.
