Otitis media (ear infection)
A painful middle-ear infection that often follows a cold, especially in infants and toddlers.
Common symptoms
- Ear pain
- Tugging at ear
- Fever
- Fussiness
- Trouble sleeping
- Fluid draining from ear
Cause
Bacteria (Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae) or viruses moving from the nose into the middle ear.
How common is it?
One of the most common childhood infections; most kids have at least one by age 3.
Treatment
Pain relief and observation for many cases; antibiotics for severe or persistent infections and for children under 2.
Prevention
Breastfeeding, up-to-date pneumococcal and flu vaccines, avoiding smoke exposure, and treating allergies.
