Stock Up Before You Need It

The worst time to realize you're out of children's Tylenol is at 2 AM with a feverish toddler. Smart parents know to stock up before sick season hits.

Your Sick Day Essentials Checklist

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, every home with children should have:

  • Fever reducers: Children's acetaminophen and ibuprofen (check expiration dates!)
  • Thermometer: A reliable digital thermometer is a must
  • Hydration: Pedialyte, coconut water, or electrolyte popsicles
  • Comfort foods: Chicken soup, crackers, applesauce
  • Tissues and vapor rub: The soft tissues with lotion are worth the splurge
  • Humidifier: Clean it now before you need it

Build Your Support Network

Talk to your employer about sick day policies now, not when you're calling in at 7 AM. Know which neighbors or family members can help in a pinch.

Consider Having Backup Plans For:

  • School pickup if your child gets sent home sick
  • Work meetings that can be rescheduled
  • Siblings who need to be kept away from the sick child

Prevention Basics

The CDC recommends these prevention strategies:

  1. Hand washing: The single most effective prevention
  2. Sleep: Kids need 10-12 hours; tired kids get sick more easily
  3. Nutrition: Fruits, vegetables, and foods rich in vitamin C
  4. Stay informed: Follow Ick to know what's circulating at your school

When to Keep Kids Home

The AAP recommends keeping children home if they have a fever, are vomiting, or seem too unwell to participate in class. Most schools require kids to be fever-free for 24 hours without medication before returning.
